Staying healthy this spring! Love your liver - eat your greens!

April 4, 2018

It's spring time again here in the desert! And by "spring time" I mean that blink-and-you-almost-missed-it time here in Vegas where the evenings are cool and the daytime highs are in the upper 70s and low 80s. Really, don't blink, it's going to be surface-of-the-sun hot in like...probably by the time I'm done writing this blog post. Haha.

Seriously though, the spring season is associated in Chinese medicine with the Wood element, the Liver and Gallbladder, growth and outward movement, planning and decision making, and expressing emotions. Right now is an excellent time to think about shopping your neighborhood farmers market for delicious seasonal fruits and veggies, doing a liver/gallbladder cleanse, getting outside more, and adding some meditation to your routine to help manage everyday stresses and keep your mind clear.

I recently got my garden going at home again (in itself a great calming/meditative activity) and this morning harvested my first Swiss chard! Swiss chard, also known as Roman kale, is a slightly sweet and bitter green and is a nutritional powerhouse full of vitamins K, A, and C, magnesium, potassium, iron, and fiber. It tastes great in salads or on a sandwich, as well as sautéed with a little garlic and olive oil. Adding a squeeze of lemon (which is sour - the flavor associated with the wood element/spring/liver) makes for a great balance for this short spring season we have here as we transition quickly into the summer.

So, remember these simple tips to make the most of this short spring season:

* Eat your greens (preferably sourced locally)

* Try drinking lemon infused water upon waking for

   nice, gentle liver support

* Get your Qi moving with some exercise by going for a walk outside (while we still can! ;)

* Keep your stress/frustration/anger at bay by practicing a short daily meditation (the app Headspace

   has some great ones)

* Clean out your closets/garage - there's a reason we do "spring cleaning" to literally get the clutter

out of our physical space, which in turn helps keep the mind clutter-free

* GET ACUPUNCTURE! You know I had to throw this one in there! The change of seasons is an

excellent time to come in for a nice "tune-up" to optimize your health this season!
