Allergies driving you crazy?!

If you are in the Las Vegas area then you know that we've had a rough allergy season this year! It may seem odd to still be talking allergies in mid-June, but it's been so prevalent in patients that we have been seeing lately that it can't be ignored!

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for treating allergies (one such example study is here: Typical sessions involve placing needles at key points on the face and hands. If that sounds uncomfortable, don't worry! It's not! Our needles are ultra-thin, flexible, and so comfortable that a majority of patients fall asleep during treatment.

You may wonder why some folks suffer so terribly. Well, a number of factors come into play. Of course, pollen in the air is the main culprit in most cases. However, there are some people that experience allergies and sinus congestion year-round, regardless of pollen counts.

Here in the desert, the environment is incredibly dry. This can tend to dry out the mucus membranes of the nose and sinus cavities. That moist tissue plays a big role in helping to trap allergens in the nasal cavity so that they don't reach the sinuses to cause irritation. When the membranes are dry you lose that protection.

Here are some helpful tips that we counsel patients on in our office that are especially helpful here in the desert:

* Consider using a neti pot or saline spray daily to hydrate the tissues in your nose/sinuses

* Sleep with a humidifier in your bedroom to increase moisture in the air to combat dryness

* Wash your bed linens often so that allergens don't build up

* Clean up your diet! There is a big connection between the gut and chronic inflammatory conditions, including allergies according to Chinese medicine. Having a clean diet will cut your risk down of chronic allergy problems and sinus congestion.

Already doing all those things and still suffering? Stop by our office and get some acupuncture and herbs! We regularly stock herbs that have been shown to help - both for adults and your little ones too!
