Aching Back? Try Acupuncture!

July 26, 2018

According to WebMD, "nearly 8 out of 10 people will have back pain at some point in their life." That's a staggering number of people! With the current opioid crisis, a lot of patients are seeking alternative ways to deal with their pain.  Low back pain is the most common condition that people seek treatment for in our offices. Luckily for most folks, acupuncture is a very effective treatment for both chronic and acute low back pain.

If you've never tried it, you may have questions about how the whole process works. Here are some of the most common questions about acupuncture for low back pain.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE HELP ALLEVIATE LOW BACK PAIN?

Acupuncture helps in several ways. First and foremost, inserting acupuncture needles into the local tissue helps promote blood flow and brings in healing chemicals to the affected area. Secondly, acupuncture stimulates the release of your internal pain relieving chemicals called endorphins. Finally, acupuncture also disrupts your body's perception of pain signals causing you to perceive less pain. Pretty cool, huh?!

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL IT TAKE TO FEEL BETTER?

The answer to this question depends on several factors, but for most people you should expect to receive 5-12 treatments to get the full therapeutic effect of acupuncture. A lot of it depends upon how sensitive you are to acupuncture's effects. Some patients feel significant relief after just one visit while others take until the 5th or 6th visit. A full course of treatment for low back pain is 10-12 visits. It's important to follow the doctor's recommendations as to frequency and number of visits to get the most out of your care.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

For patients with insurance, low back pain is almost always a covered diagnosis if you have acupuncture as a benefit on your policy. Our office will happily check your benefits. If it turns out that you don't have coverage, then typical out of pocket costs range from $350 - $890 for a course of treatment (again, 5-12 visits). If that sounds like a lot, don't worry! We offer several payment options to help make treatment accessible to everyone, including discount packages and payment plans. Most people find it a small cost to pay to feel better and get their life back after suffering for years.
